Find U.S. Census data related to your beat (list the data with a link and one story idea on blog).

 It was hard to find real Census data related to crime and public safety on colleges campuses and crime that relates to beat but what I did find was campus safety data. According to College Tuition Compare under the title of 'How Safe and Secure CAU Campuses?" that in 2023 there was 57 total incidents that year and the date shows that the action rate is 13.78 per 1,000 students on and off campus. A story idea that came to my head when I seen this was a story about what the date reveals and what students say. This is a good story for my beat because using real data that talks about the public safety on campus and combining it with how students feel would give me a story of what is shown to the public vs what is really happening and how theses numbers could get down to 0.

I went to one of the public safety booth and as I was there I noticed many things. A lot of students walk passed theses booth with not a slight care in the world or when they see a public safety officer they say something about them then walk off. It is not until our public safety officers start asking to see peoples school id cards to make sure they are students when a lot of people start to complain how they should know them by now when in reality they officers are just trying to make sure everyone is safe so no outsiders get behind the gates and potentially harm someone. A possible story idea could be why do students feel like it is not necessary to show their paw cards when asked to by public safety.

Interview a student outside your major for their perspective on your beat. Blog about it.

I interviewed Sophomore student Corionna Sindad a Psychology major. She had an interesting perspective on the beat talking about how public safety should get more recognition because a lot of the time they are the first responders to some of these dangerous events that happen or could happen on campus before the police get there and a lot of people still talk bad about them. She had a lot to say about public safety and what she sees on campus. This perspective gave me a lot of different story ideas for my beat.
